Hagia Sophia in Istanbul can boast a very long history. It has survived earthquakes, struggles for religious power and has been successively church (basilica), mosque and now, finally, museum. It is known as Ayasofya in Turkish, and was dedicated to the Wisdom of God, to the Logos. Formerly there were two churches considered as “Churches of Divine Wisdom” but Hagia Sophia is the only one that still stands.
They also call her Hagia Sophia, although that name is not associated with the saint of the same name, as is wrongly believed. The name refers rather to its relationship “with Divine Wisdom” since “Sophia” means “wisdom” in Greek.
